IEEE10 UPCRAFT : IOT BASED KIOSK FOR COMMUNITY UPCYCLING MANAGEMENT

Upcycling enables waste products to be repurposed and upgraded creatively to add value to the compositional elements. This increases the quality and lifetimes of materials and reduces wastes. However, upcycling is considered trivial and non-productive due to the lack of smart collective systems that is accessible and usable within communal participation. Seeing this as an opportunity, UPCRAFT is developed comprising smart kiosk and a mobile application that could manage recyclables collections collectively. This smart kiosk can detect the quantity of the disposal item tossed into the kiosk and an ultrasonic sensor to monitor container capacity. The apps allow user to navigate to nearest kiosk and updated on kiosk capacity for item collection and contribution. The project is in line with SDG-12 and SDG-11 which supports environmental sound management of waste through a more sustainable practice of reuse and recycle, and communal action to reduce environmental impact of city resources. The system prototype has been tested and testers raved on its optimistic possibility to the improvement of waste management in the community level as it encourages community participation in managing disposable waste in the households. UPCRAFT definitely has the potential to encourage Malaysian to upcycle and not just recycle waste.
