Roaming Romania (Transfagarasan Rd)

This is the last episode of my Romania trip before heading to neighboring Bulgaria. On this episode, we took the epic ride along the famed Transfagaran Rd, famous for its numerous rivers, roadside waterfalls, and snakey highway which had been favorite photo stops. The drive also included a stop at Balea Lake, a glacial lake which was created by melting glaciers. This spot is also good for seeing the winding highways. On our way back to Bucharest, we encountered several brown bears. Although it was a delight to see these animals up close, it is also said that they had been accustomed to motorists throwing food at them, making them prone to road accidents and losing fear of humans which may not end very well for both people and bears. We also passed by the ruins of the Poenari Castle, the real home of Vlad Tepes (Dracula). It used to be open to the public and you can climb the hill to visit the ruins. There were replicas of impaled prisoners as it was practiced during Vlad's rule. Unfortunately, it is now closed to the public for rehabilitation and because of the presence of a number of bears in the ruins. Our last stop was the Curte de Artes Monastery, an Orthodox Cathedral dedicated to the Dorminion of the Mother of God. Within the grounds there is also the Neo-Romanian style Royal Palace built in late 19th century Visited July 2024.
