Hi friends! If you're new to my channel, welcome! I hope you enjoy my content and subscribe. I am Brianna "Bri" A. Baker, a first-year counseling psychology Ph.D. student at Columbia University Teachers College. I'm always open to feedback and what would be most helpful for you. I've received some requests for a personal statement video, so I'll be sure to get that out shortly (its finals season, so bear with me!). Today's video is all about the red flags I saw at potential Ph.D. programs or institutions that I thought I'd share with you all. After interviewing at 9 clinical psychology and counseling psychology programs, my mind was racing with so many thoughts. I had to make an excel sheet for each school's pros and cons (video on that coming later!). These are some of the running themes that caused me to cross institutions off my list. This isn't like undergrad where you can just choose the most prestigious school you get into. It's all about finding that perfect fit, and if you see one or more of these red flags...RUN! I can't stress how important it is to choose a place that you can really see as your home for the next 5+ years. The Ph.D. is long and taxing, but being surrounded by supportive and uplifting advisors and peers can make ALL the difference. While not all Ph.D. programs work the same way, many programs in the social sciences and humanities have a scaffolding model where you are paired with an advisor and placed on their research team. You must find a mentor that is affirming and collaborative, rather than impatient and authoritarian. You also want to pay attention to students that you interact with-- are they intimidating you, or are they eager to get to know you? Like, share, subscribe, blah blah blah- and follow me!
