During a visit to Tasmania in 2017 the composer of this video was moved by seeing the memorial to the many thousands of women, who, with their children, were transported to Tasmania (then Van Diermen’s Land) during the first half of the nineteenth century. The music which accompanies the video attempts to convey the sadness experienced by those who had been forcibly separated from their families and their loved ones. In an attempt to portray the melancholy of those who were victims of this transportation, the music is based on a C minor pentatonic scale, close in structure to much Gaelic music. The theme is developed though a number of related keys, but with a progressive diminution of the minor intervals, although the minor mode is retained throughout. The video is dedicated to Dr. Ralph Barnes, friend and colleague, who has given faithful service to the Tasmanian population during a period of nearly half a century.
