What an unbelievable privilege it was to take several trips around CVN-78 USS Gerald R. Ford as she was moored in Portsmouth harbour in Southern England. The Gerald R. Ford is the newest addition to the US Navy and the biggest and most powerful aircraft carrier in the world. Currently embarked on this flagship of the US Navy are Carrier Air Wing Eight, which is comprised of the following Squadrons: VFA-37 ‘Bulls’ - F/A-18E Super Hornet (100 modex) VFA-213 ‘Black Lions’ - F/A-18F Super Hornet (200 modex) VFA-31 ‘Tomcatters’ - F/A-18E Super Hornet (300 modex) VFA-87 ‘Golden Warriors’ - F/A-18E Super Hornet (400 modex) VAW-124 'Bear Aces' - E-2D Hawkeye (600 modex) VAQ-142 'Gray Wolves'- EA-18G Growler (500 modex) HSC-9 'Tridents' MH-60S Seahawk (610 modex) HSM-70 'Spartans' MH-60R Seahawk (700 modex) VRC-40 DET4 'Rawhides' C-2A Greyhound The Gerald R. Ford is currently the only carrier of its kind in the world. The Ford class will eventually go on to replace the Nimitz class, 10 of these impressive machines will be built over the next 10-15 years. The Ford class feature stealth technology to reduce the radar signature of the mighty ship, as well as the EMALS electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System which means this class of carrier can surge up to 220 aircraft missions a day. This is a personal first for me and I'm so so glad I made the trip down. To be so close to this most impressive of vessels is the memory of a lifetime. I do hope to catch up with this mighty ship again in years to come.
