Liberate oneself from classical mess Bruce Lee was open-minded to use different equipment in order to enhance his attributes and skills in combat. He was looking for functionality, aliveness and thought that equipment should model real opponent therefore as his training methods evolved so did his equipment. It's well known fact that Bruce practiced on wodden dummy however according to Jerry Poteet Bruce didn't practice wooden dummy sets but rather free flow. In 1969 Bruce Lee wrote a letter to William Cheung in which he stated "I've lost faith in the Chinese classical arts(...) because basically all styles are product of land swimming, even the Wing Chun school. So my line of training is more towards efficient street fighting.(...) I've named my style Jeet Kune Do- reason for my not sticking to Wing Chun because I sincerely feel that this style has more to offer regarding efficiency." Also he indicated in a letter to his student Taky Kimura: "As I've pointed out, this coming meeting will be the most beneficial to your cultivation in "Jeet Kune Do", no longer Wing Chun. It might be your enlightment in the Way of Combat." Bruce Lee himself advised one of Black Belt's readers, who practiced kung fu and sent him an inquiry regarding martial arts practice after reading his article titled "Liberate yourself from classical Karate", to forget all "organized despair" forms and katas and to hang a heavybag and use hands as he would use his hands on boxing training instead. According to Ted Wong, Bruce Lee's last major private student and sparring partner, who is considered his protegé Bruce Lee replaced the wooden dummy training with heavybag and punching bags training. As punching bags are moveable and allow maximum hitting power. In theirs different forms and shapes, they represent the best target for hitting plus it's a great equipment to practice evasive footwork and hitting while changing angles. So, the training is not fixed in one place and as Bruce Lee started to focus more on mobility, hitting from further distance, changing angles the wooden dummy training became less evident as it was too fixed and stationary and less realistic. To quote Ted Wong: "Eventually, chi sao and wing chun wooden dummy workouts became non-existent in Bruce Lee's training by the late 1960s".-Inside Kung Fu, Sept. 1994 As Bruce Lee's approach was focused on simplicity, directness and efficiency. The equipment that he used in his training regime served his own development and efficiency in combat. So, we should follow the roadmap he left behind instead of stick to or overthink what he had abandoned on his martial evolution in the art and science of Jeet Kune Do.Special credit goes to my Sifu Joaquin Marcelo for sharing video of his private lesson with Ted Wong at his home in Los Angeles.
