What its like to mine cryptocurrency on a graphics card in 2021 Ethereum is up and the merge has been pushed over the horizon, so GPU mining is back on the menu! #GPU #mining #profit GPUs… Pretty much ANYONE can run a GPU or two, if you find some way to get your hands on one. Im here to talk about the realities of cryptocurrency mining on a graphics card or graphics cards. all of these things are changing constantly - from the price of Ether, or Ergo or Raven to the price of the cards that mine it - not to mention the difficulty of the network, or even the climate outside your house or wherever youre going to put these things. In the winter time, it might be a joy to have an 1100 watt space heater running all the time inside.. Next summer, though, maybe a rack of hot hot computer gear in the same room youre tying to enjoy the spoils of your work can turn into a bit of a problem to solve. Im coming from the perspective of a 5x RTX 3080 GPU mine, or right around 500 Mh/s which is pulling about 1.2 kW, thats one thousand two hundred watts for the graphics cards. hashing away on the Phoenix 5.5c algorithm. Profits. This set up, these five 3080’s, and these are the non-LHR - the original 3080’s that I bought in May of 2021 JUST before the very worst time, price wise , to start getting into this whole thing - I think I spent about $1800-2000 dollars per card, so with the extra motherboard, ram, a hard drive and risers I am into this thing about ten thousand dollars. And if the most recent chatter is to be believed, we’ve now got until at least June 2022 to continue along the same path of mining Ethereum before the projections turn into a grey part of the map that we havent uncovered yet so future profits beyond that are in the 100% pure speculation realm. Heat and Noise.. So the method of cooling your GPUs makes an enormous difference in how they will sound. Here in my studio, Ive been experimenting a bit between liquid cooled cards and air cooled cards. The liquid cooled cards are very very quiet. BASICALLY silent. They do have fans on the radiators to dump the heat out of the coolant, but they run slowly and you pretty much dont hear them, even when mining. The air cooled cards, if youre just letting them rip with an overclock, will run their fans really fast - its not hard on the cards as long as the temperature is under control, youre not going to ‘wear them out’ or anything, but they’re a lot louder. My 3080s run on about 235 watts a piece, and I have 5 of them.. So thats just under 1200 watts - but then plus a motherboard, the CPU, whatever fans and these window AC’s - to run this room Im using ABOUT 2000 watts continuous. If youre venturing into Red Panda territory where your card count is in the dozens - well then go see my Realities of an S19J Pro video to see the type of heat dump setup you’ll be looking into instead. At 11 cents a kWh my setup works out to cost about five dollars a day or $150 bucks a month in electricity to produce $1500 dollars a month worth of crypto. Thats one heck of a return on that money! So, if you’ve already got a fairly high spec gaming computer - go start mining with it, like right now. Really there isnt a downside - especially in the winter. Starting a purpose built GPU mine farm from scratch is not cheap, but I would say if you’ve just been thinking about putting one together and you have the money, as long as you buy current gen graphics cards, sure they wont be worth full price when its time to sell them again, but by June of next year, they will have certainly mined more than the difference, and you should be in the green (I mean unless theres another crash in price and you decide to sell at the bottom). Shoot, the price of Ethereum could DOUBLE by then! Aaaaand it could also drop in half - so its still gambling, I dont want to mislead anyone into thinking this is automatic free money, just because historically the price has only ever gone up on longer time scales. Enough of us will hang on as long as we can, and even longer than we should, that in my opinion the used GPU market wont be flooded ENOUGH for the cards to come down too fast in price. The global Chip Shortage will still be in full swing next year, unfortunately.
