2:43 - RISC vs CISC myth busting - ARM binary consists only 10% more instructions than x86 (IPC=PPC) 9:43 - Number of available registers comparison: ARM has 32 vs. only 16 registers in x86 17:00 - IPC comparison ARM vs x86 CPU battle: ARM CPUs has much higher IPC/PPC 18:38 - x86 variable instruction length typical distribution 20:55 - Binary size comparison - ARM binary is only 16% larger 22:40 - Instruction coding: fixed width RISC(ARM) vs. variable width CISC (x86) 25:45 - Apple's CPU memory compression patented hi-tech: Larger ARM binary eliminated 27:17 - Memory compression - Energy shopping list 19:20 - Number of instructions - ARM is not Reduced ISA, ARM is very complex and high performance oriented 35:24 - IPC advantage from ISA (ARM is better) 41:56 - Roots of ARM ISA and x86 (ARM is very modern ISA, x86 is ISA from 1978) 46:46 - FPU/SIMD ISA comparison (2048-bit ARM SVE2 vs. 512-bit AVX512 x86) 51:55 - AVX512 has 17 subset - big problem for x86 segmentation and standardization 54:16 - ARM's SVE2 56:13 - Summary & Conclusions (x86 is irreparable bad) 1:00:07 - Future of ARM & x86 based on IPC data - Probably total annihilation of x86 History is repeating - x86 in '90s was cheap and open. There were a lot of chip designers which accelerated performance and consequently market share. There were Cyrix, Nexgen, IDT Winchip, Intel and AMD. Huge competition on huge growing market - economy enablers for success. While Alpha, SPARC, Itanium and PA-RISC were expensive and closed/proprietary with no internal competition and also became minor ISAs - economy death was inevitable. Today x86 - closed/proprietary duopoly with very limited competition, very expensive and is already minor ISA (ARM has more than 80% CPU market share world wide). With Zen3 cranking prices up is getting even worse. Economy death is also inevitable. OTOH ARM started as an outsider (similarly as x86) with cheap CPU, open licensing model, so huge competition among all designers and vendors - all those are economy success enablers. ARM will win due to better economy model - open licensing provides higher competition (higher performance) while restrict monopoly (low prices). Examples for performance: ARM Cortex X1 ..... +30% IPC over Intel 9900K ARM Apple A13 .... +82% IPC over Intel 9900K ARM Nuvia Phoeninx ..... at least +100% IPC over Intel 9900K Examples for price: AMD EPYC 7742 (64-core Zen2, 8xDDR4 channels) ... 7,461$ USD ARM AWS Graviton2 (64-core A76/N1, 8xDDR4 ch) ... 500$ USD ARM is better and modern ISA, better economic model, open for licensing ... it was only matter of time when x86 will be outperformed and consequently annihilated. RIP x86.
