Somewhere someone has a video of me rippin’ the Star Spangled Banner on this guitar in a certain bar in Honduras…. I digress The fabled Ibanez RG550 in road flare red. It was first released in 1987 as a more affordable variant of the highly successful JEM777 model which was designed in conjunction with Steve Vai. Definitely a turning point in the history of the electric guitar. Although 80s shred guitar music might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I think it’s important to remember what a progressive time period it was for the guitar as an instrument during this time period. Van Halen’s first record was released in 1978 and the race was on. Many guitarists of the day were in an outright war for speed and technique and the guys making guitars sought out to deliver. Taking inspiration from players like Vai and Eddie Van Halen who had been heavily modifying guitars to get what they wanted, companies like Jackson, Ibanez, Charvel, Kramer and others started incorporating new features rarely seen before: super thin necks, 24 frets, the floyd rose double locking tremolo, pointy shapes, ridiculous colors, super deep cutaways, humbuckers in strat style bodies etc. Although more vintage style instruments based on 50s and 60s designs remain popular today, the cultural impact of guitars built for speed, the people that played them, and the music they created during the first wave of glammed out hair metal SHRED in the 70s and 80s will be forever remembered and the saga continues with shredders today. P.S. I wrote this off the top of my head, some of the shit might be wrong but it sounds like a good way to tell the story This guitar in particular is from the genesis series and is a bad mofo. Made in Japan, hot pickups, jumbo frets, all the things, great build quality at a great price if youre in the market for something like this The lil diddy I played is just some stuff I made up.
