Missed Port in Saint-Pierre & Miquelon 🇫🇷 Rough Seas & Epic Pilot Boat footage

Sometimes cruising reminds you who’s really in charge - and it’s not the ship. During our Atlantic Canada cruise aboard Holland America Line’s Volendam, we were scheduled to visit Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, France’s tiny overseas territory just off the coast of Newfoundland. Unfortunately, rough and choppy seas made it unsafe for the ship to enter the port. Even though we couldn’t dock, international maritime rules still applied. Because Saint-Pierre & Miquelon is a different country, official clearance documents had to be delivered by pilot boat so the ship could be formally checked into and released from France. 🇫🇷 Watching the pilot boat battle heavy waves was a powerful reminder of how dangerous and highly skilled these jobs are. Pilot boat crews operate in some of the most challenging conditions at sea, transferring people and paperwork while timing waves, wind, and massive moving vessels with incredible precision. No port stop but a fascinating look at cruising, maritime safety, and life on the Atlantic. Video taken - Aug 23, 2025
