Volcán Cotopaxi is one of the most iconic volcanoes in the world with its majestic height and symmetrical cone shape, inspiring an apparel brand and attracting hikers and climbers from all over. Standing at 5,897 meters (19,347 feet) above sea level, it is the second-highest mountain in Ecuador, and it's located about two hours south of the capital city of Quito. The biggest challenge on the mountain is the elevation; the standard route is not technical (rated PD), though it can be extremely steep in sections (approximately 50 degrees), and you have to navigate around several crevasses and seracs. From the refuge, it is about an hour hike to reach the glacier. From there you traverse a steep slope before turning upwards and entering a section with a number of beautiful and dramatic crevasses and small seracs. After this fun section is the steepest part of the ascent at 50 degrees, which takes about an hour to get up to the final summit push. Due to the volcano's high activity, climbers often put on gas masks for the final push due to the toxic and noxious gasses flowing up from the summit crater. The day we summited in late December 2025, the gasses were high and obscured the sometimes visible crater. However we still had excellent views from the summit of nearby volcanoes, including Antisana, Iliniza, and even Cayambe, which is north of Quito. During my previous trip to Ecuador in January 2023, Cotopaxi was actively erupting and was closed to hiking and climbing. It has had nearly 90 known eruptions since the mid-16th century. For this adventure we utilized NorthxSouth Expeditions, a local guiding company out of Quito. I highly recommend their personable and well-qualified guides.
