Newport Bermuda race, day 2, 6pm to midnight. All six hours of it. Boat: J/105 USA 124 "Blue Flash" Owner/Skipper: Matt Arno (also navigator and floating crew) Watch Captain 1: Ken Davis Watch Crew 1: Scott Hurst Watch Captain 2: Jim Cooper Watch Crew 2: Joe Tomberline Sails hoisted: Main, 89m2 spinnaker, jib top 00:00:00 Hour 27 Jim relieves Ken. The wind is starting to pipe up a bit. Wave action really wants to turn the boat up and across the wind. 00:06:10 Broach! 00:06:25 Tack line strips its covers and slips clutch. Now the chute won't stay collapsed and driving out of it is nearly impossible. 00:07:45 Boat gets on its feet. 00:08:31 Recover spinnaker and deploy the jib top 00:17:08 Rig new tack line 00:21:45 Rerig 89m2 spinnaker 00:29:54 Relaunch 89m2 spinnaker (disaster) 00:40:40 Redeploy the jib top (I drink in some horizon from companion way, so I don't puke) 00:41:37 Back on course 01:15:03 Hour 28 - Joe takes the helm 01:20:05 Dinner is served 02:41:18 Gybe the boat 02:49:00 Tidy up the boat as daylight fails 03:48:00 Scott and Ken prepare for the 10pm shift 04:04:00 Hour 31 - Scott takes the helm from Joe 05:03:00 Hour 32 - Ken takes the helm I was turning around in the head when the broach began. I went flying into the sink/hull. I went from perfect to very seasick in milliseconds. At that same time, we learned that our plan for keeping supplied and personal items behind the settees was inadequate. The cabin sole was turned into a minefield. By the time I could conceivably come after/above to help, it is clear a squirrel will be needed. Rather than coming up for some delicious horizon, I stayed in the fore peak and waited for the chute to come down. And then again immediately, after the relaunch. I felt really bad by the end of that episode. It was my only bout of seasickness on the trip. Fortunately, by my next watch at 10pm, I was largely recovered.
