On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Santa Monica Closeup traveled along the Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu Pier to Santa Monica to document ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating Palisades Fire. With the highway still closed to the public, it has become a critical operations hub for rebuilding and securing fire-ravaged areas. National Guard troops, Los Angeles Police Officers, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies were stationed at checkpoints, ensuring only authorized personnel could enter affected zones. Meanwhile, California Highway Patrol Officers patrolled the area, where the speed limit has been temporarily reduced to 25 miles per hour to accommodate recovery operations. Residents and contractors must obtain an entry pass to access impacted areas. Utility crews continue to restore essential services. LADWP and Southern California Edison are working to reestablish electricity, while The Gas Company and SoCalGas focus on re-energizing gas lines. At the same time, Frontier Communications and Spectrum are restoring communication services to reconnect affected communities. The Palisades Fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, in Pacific Palisades, rapidly intensified due to strong Santa Ana winds and prolonged drought conditions. The wildfire scorched over 23,000 acres, destroyed more than 12,000 structures, and forced the evacuation of 150,000 residents from Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and the San Fernando Valley. At least five people lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries. The high winds significantly hindered containment efforts, grounding aerial firefighting support and allowing the flames to spread uncontrollably. Although recent rainfall has helped extinguish the fire, it has also increased the risk of mudslides and debris flows in the affected areas. By January 27, evacuation orders were lifted, signaling a crucial phase in the recovery process. Now, cleanup crews are focused on debris removal, utility restoration, and ensuring safe access for residents as they begin the challenging process of rebuilding their lives.
