Was meant to be a quick and easy afternoon coastal flight while the big boys had gone inland. Launched at 3:30pm and conditions looked good until at least 6–7pm. Unfortunately rain moved in over launch, so I flew 10kms north to wait it out. While waiting, a friend flew up and carried on north towards Manukau Heads, so I tagged along as I couldn't fly back yet anyway. Had an awesome flight up north, beautiful views, loads of lift and was frequently above 1000ft. As we flew back, the wind got lighter and lighter until eventually we were stuck at the big gap on the north side. Tried to scratch up but no luck. Nicholas made a run for it and found no lift on the other side. I tried for another half an hour but eventually gave in and landed with him—not before sending some messages out so people knew where we'd be (no reception at ground level). Got rescued by some awesome people—a family having dinner on the beach (how lucky were we!) and a fellow hang-glider pilot who had delayed his drive home to chat to some PGs on the beach. Great adventure, although maybe some questions to ask ourselves about how sensible we were to spend so long at the north side.
