Marian Demar & Ork. „Odeon” dyr. J. Gert – Graj skrzypku, graj (Play Fiddler, Play) Tango (Lidauer-Zdrojewski) Odeon 1935 (Polish) NOTE: This is another tango in the series of "Gypsy tangos" so popular in Europe in the 1930s. This song is the Polish response to two of them: "Oh Play To Me, Gypsy" (in Polish: "Graj Piękny Cyganie" • Polish Tango: Adam Aston - Graj piękny Cyg... ) by Czech composer Karel Vacek and the equally famous "Gypsy, You Have Stolen My Heart" (in Polish: Miłość Cygana • Old Polish Tango: Marian Demar - Miłość Cy... ) by German composer Franz Grothe. Both were released in 1934 and became huge international hits, but this Polish "Gypsy tango" is no less melodic, catchy, and rightfully so, it became an instant hit in Poland (although it was performed by the Juranda Choir at the little-known, ephemeral Warsaw cabaret Nowa Scena). Here it is sung quite beautifully by one of the lesser-remembered Polish crooners of the interwar period, Marian Demar, accompanied by the excellent Odeon studio orchestra conducted by the Polish Odeon's music director, Jerzy Gert. The photoshow displays some vintage posters of dance venues in prewar Poland.
