Hi everybody, and welcome to my "stevenofpa" YouTube Channel! This video shows you what it's like to see how this PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) vacuum tube was made, by using simple parts that can be purchased at your local hardware store, or big box store like Home Depot or Lowe's. 5/26/2021 Hi everybody,This vehicle is a 1995 Jeep Cherokee XJ, and this is the new PCV vacuum tube that I just installed. Like a lot of vacuum and tubing applications, the PCV tubing system on these XJs is A BIT complicated, because each connection point is a different size fitting. For example, the plastic nipple on the “PCV Fixed Orifice” on the valve cover is 0.55-inches, so basically it’s a 1/2 -inch connection, while the metal hose nipple on the intake manifold measures in at 0.25-inches, so, it’s a quarter-inch connection. When the old tube connections deteriorate, and need to be replaced, it’s not so simple, where you can just cut off a piece of bulk hose, and put on a new one. Especially with rubber fuel or vacuum line, they’re not so forgiving when you try and FORCE it onto a connector that’s too big. Now, you may be thinking, “That’s no big deal. I’ll just get a piece of HALF-inch tube, and a piece of ¼-inch tube, and a reducer fitting to connect them together. This may work if you can find the fitting online, but if you try to get them locally, at a hardware store or big-box store like Home Depot or Lowes, you’ll find that they probably don’t stock couplers that go from ONE-HALF down to ONE-QUARTER. But I found a solution for the XJ which has worked well on MANY engines that I’ve repaired, and here it is. Like I hinted, Home Depot sells rolls of REINFORCED VINYL tubing in various sizes, and in this case, I’m using 1/2- and 1/4 -inch tubes. This works well for the valve cover AND intake manifold connections, but we still need a UNION of sorts to hook them up. So I use these ¼-inch hose barb adapters, along with a ⅝-inch band clamp. The ¼-inch barb fitting is JUST PERFECT for the ¼-inch tube, and surprisingly, the ¼-inch MIP threaded end fits well INSIDE the ½-inch hose. I just like to use the clamp for added security. After that, it just has to be pressed onto the fittings, and you’re good to go. (Just be careful and gentle with the plastic “fixed orifice” connection, as these CAN become brittle over time). And, if you like, check out my OTHER video on how I made the PCV Air Inlet tube. So, pretty cool.
