(7 Aug 1998) English/Nat U-S investigators are on their way to Kenya and Tanzania in support of efforts to find those responsible for the bombing of the American embassies there. They'll be looking to find out more about the terrorist blasts that have so far claimed the lives of more than 80 people. As they do, those who stand guard at America's outposts around the world continue to train back in the U-S-A. This is the business end of America's effort to secure its embassies and staff around the world. At this base in Quantico, Virginia - less than an hour south of Washington D-C - these trainees make up the latest class of the U-S Marine Corps security guard school. Just over 100 Marines have volunteered to be part of this class - and right now, they're into the second week of a six-week training programme. They are at Quantico to learn the finer points of protecting U-S facilities and U-S citizens who serve abroad. Soon, those who qualify will join some 11-hundred Marines already on station at U-S embassies around the world. This class, like every class, is under the care and watchful eye of the U-S Marine Corps Security Guard Battalion. It is the only facility of its kind in the Marine Corps - and every trainee heading for a U-S embassy or consulate around the world comes through here. They get their training from those who have been there - the instructors have served as commanders of Marine guard detachments based overseas. They try to give trainees the basics they'll need to defend and protect - and they offer a little advice. But, they say, those who serve will also have to adapt. SOUNDBITE: (English) ".....Our training basically takes them to be qualified to go out to post. And as far as dealing with out there, they learn as they go along while they're out there, and we share our experiences with them as instructors. But that's really about it." SUPER CAPTION: Master Gunnery Sergeant Rene Briones, Chief Instructor, Marine Corps Security Guard School The rest is up to the hundreds of U-S Marines standing guard around the world. Marines in the security guard programme are housed in this facility. But it's more than a barracks. This is the Marine Guard headquarters, set up by design to look and operate like an embassy. All who enter here are subject to close scrutiny, with the help of real Marine guards and TV surveillance. Those who work here are familiar with the Marine's legacy of standing guard abroad. They remember the tragedy of the 1983 Beirut bombing that left more than 200 Americans dead, many of them Marines. The Kenya and Tanzania attacks, says the commander here, may offer another painful lesson. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The primary benefit that we will get out of this is to use it as an attention gainer. This is one of the unexpected things that will occur out there. And just when you think you have the routine down out at post, always expect the unexpected." SUPER CAPTION: Major Steve Dionne, Officer in Charge, Marine Corps Security Guard School That's exactly what the Marine Corps is trying to drill into these aspiring young guardians of American outposts around the world. In less than six weeks, they'll be on their way and perhaps into harms way, to do what they already know will be a difficult and dangerous job. SOUNDBITE: (English) "....Our training basically takes them to be qualified to go out to post. And as far as dealing with out there, they learn as they go along while they're out there, and we share our experiences with them as instructors. But that's really about it."
