Endometrial Thickness Below 5mm? Know the Causes, Treatments & Next Steps | Dr Jay Mehta

When the endometrial lining stays below 5 mm in thickness, it is known as a thin endometrium. One of the most common causes in India is previous surgeries like D&C (dilation and curettage) which can lead to the inner lining of the uterus sticking together, a condition called Asherman’s syndrome. Asherman’s syndrome is very difficult to treat. In one case, a patient underwent multiple treatments including hystero laparoscopy, stem cell therapy, bone marrow injections, and PRP therapy, yet her endometrial thickness remained at just 3.7 mm. When the uterus does not respond to treatment, the chances of pregnancy become extremely low. In such cases, surrogacy may be the only option. But in India, surrogacy is allowed only if it is altruistic, which means a close relative must volunteer to be the surrogate. This makes the process more complicated for many families.
