ECGS customer Rocky's 1982 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler was built with one goal in mind: simplicity, durability, and zero electronics. An EMP proof drivetrain backed by modern strength where it matters. In this video, Rocky walks through his third project with East Coast Gear Supply and explains why he chose a Dana 60 rear axle, Dana 44 front axle, 4.56 gears, manual OX lockers, full one ton steering, hydroboost brakes, and a spring over suspension conversion. This is not a bolt on cosmetic upgrade. This is a purpose built drivetrain designed to handle a 304 V8, Turbo 400 transmission, and NP205 transfer case without compromise. Build Highlights: • 1982 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler • 304 AMC V8 • Turbo 400 automatic transmission • NP205 transfer case • Dana 60 rear axle • Dana 44 front axle • 4.56 gear ratio front and rear • Manual OX cable actuated lockers • Spring over axle conversion • Rear traction bar • One ton steering system • GM half ton brake upgrade • Hydroboost brake assist Why Dana 60 Rear? The factory CJ axles were never designed for V8 torque and a heavy duty transfer case like the NP205. The Dana 60 offers larger axle shafts, a stronger ring and pinion, and increased load capacity. It is the gold standard for serious builds. Why 4.56 Gears? With larger tires and the weight of a CJ8, 4.56 provides a strong balance between highway drivability and trail torque multiplication. Combined with a Turbo 400 and NP205, it creates a dependable low range setup without sacrificing road manners. Why Manual OX Lockers? This build eliminates electronics entirely. No solenoids. No air compressors. No wiring. Manual cable actuated lockers ensure engagement even in extreme conditions. Perfect for an EMP resilient drivetrain concept. Spring Over Conversion Moving to a spring over axle configuration increases ground clearance and improves approach angles. It also requires proper pinion angle correction and traction management, which is why a rear traction bar was installed to control axle wrap. Hydroboost Braking System Upgrading to larger GM brakes required more stopping power. Hydroboost uses hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump rather than engine vacuum. This delivers significantly increased braking force and consistent pedal feel, especially with larger tires. The result? A CJ8 that tracks straight at highway speed, steers with one finger, and locks all four tires under hard braking. Modern performance in a mechanically simple package.
