I've previously made a video about the conflict between the Sami people and the Swedes, but as I was visiting the town of Jokkmokk far north in Swedish Lapland, I decided to dive deeper into Sami culture. For more videos every week, subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/threestarvaga... Also, join the Three Star Vagabond Facebook group to discuss upcoming videos: / threestarvagabond This video covers both the Sami people, including a bit of their history, and Sapmi - the Sami cultural and geographic area that covers parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. The Sami are the indigenous people of the artic regions of Europe, and Sapmi is the area where they primarily reside. The topics I cover also include reindeer and reindeer herding, information about the Lapland region itself, and discussions around the Sami people's past...and their future. I also dive into the topic of Duodji, traditional Sami handicraft. Or Duodje as it's also called. And that also brings me to the Sami language...or languages I should say. Depending on how you count there's either one language with a few different dialects - or nine different languages. Even though one dialect is only spoken by two people these days. And fewer and fewer people are speaking the Sami language, because the Sami numbers are dwindling each year. There's a lot more to cover about Sweden's indigenous people, but I hope that this will be a nice introduction and overview at least!
