The Role of Parents in Recruiting

Nick and Gage talk about the role of parents during the recruiting process and how to best help a player. Share your thoughts and experiences below! Nick, where do we even start, it seems like there is no right answer for what parents should do a. well to clear the air, being your typical supportive and encouraging parent is the first step, but parents have to remember that coaches want to see the effort made by the player, not the parent 2. So does that mean parents should remain hands-off and have the player navigate the process on own their own? a. on the contrary, parents should actively be educating themselves on the recruiting process to support their son or daughter 1. this means asking club coaches for advice, talking to other parents who already went through the process, reading interviews with college coaches about how they like to be contacted (hint hint our college coach interviews) 2. this does NOT mean writing emails, calling the college coach or dictating where your son or daughter should go to college 3. it’s crucial that the coach deals primarily with the player so that way they can get to know each other and ensure the school is a great fit for both 3. Right, nobody likes a helicopter mom or dad, but where should parents step in? a. the obvious place is at the end of the recruiting process when finances and other adult-only conversations need to take place b. the less obvious places are continuing to motivate your son or daughter, ensure they are researching schools and compiling a list that fits their needs, UNDERSTANDING their needs like class size, closeness to home and level of commitment to the sport c. it’s very tempting to step in and hijack the entire process for fear of your son or daughter might be making the “wrong” choice, but that’s only going to hurt them in the end d. try and make yourself a “recruiting Yoda,” a sage for your son or daughter to look to in times of doubt, not a Darth Vader controlling their every thought 4. Okay sounds like parents should just maintain a delicate balance of guidance, but do coaches even care about the families or just the player? a. it might have sounded like ALL the coaches care about are the players, but in reality coaches are recruiting the whole family so make sure you’re on your best behavior b. don’t be that annoying parent in the stands screaming at the refs or even worse, the coach c. you’re under the microscope almost as much as your son or daughter, so don’t hurt their chances at their dream school by your misconduct Overall, we know you love your kids and want the best for them and so do we, so be sure to check out our other videos to help you through the recruiting process and good luck!
