On this auspicious occasion of World Environment day it is only right to celebrate the glorious rivers which form a part of our natural habitat. Talakaveri/ Kaveri is considered to be one of the most important rivers of Karnataka. There is a lot known about the Kaveri dispute but very less known about it's origin and history. Through this beautiful bharatanatyam presentation, we would like to share the tale of the origin of river Kaveri. River Kaveri has its roots in Coorg a district of Karnataka. As the tale goes, it is believed that Sage Agastya wishes to marry Lopamudra but she puts forth a condition. She tells him that she will marry him only if he promises to never separate from her. He agrees to the terms placed by Lopamudra and the marriage takes place. On a particular occasion he leaves her and she feels deceived and cheated, so she transforms herself into river Kaveri and settles into the land of the Kodavas. This beautiful compostion 'Kaveramma Devi Thaaye' is in praise of Goddess Kaveri, the protector of the Kodavas (of Coorg). Watch this story being beautifully depicted by our student Kum.
