Waterways Wildlife: The Great Toad Migration – A Wildlife Spectacle

This video is slightly different from my usual narrowboat-type videos, as I am looking at something extraordinary that happens every spring near ponds and waterways in the UK. Every spring, thousands of toads make epic journeys from where they spend most of their time back to the ponds in which they were born. And in this video, I visit one such spawning pond near the River Thames where up to 11,000 toads — plus some frogs and smooth newts — will move from the relative safety of a wood across a busy main road to get to their pond. In the video, I look at the woods where the toads spend their time and explore the routes and challenges they face to get to the pond. I also look at the efforts that have been taken to prevent the toads from being killed on the main road — from toad tunnels under the road to barriers and toad patrollers in the woods and fields.
