This journey begins on the historic Vorarlberg Railway, an Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) line that extends north-south through Vorarlberg and across the border to Lindau, Germany. Following the Rhine Valley and Walgau valleys, this line connects Bregenz, Dornbirn, and Feldkirch with Bludenz, where it meets the Arlberg Railway, providing a stunning perspective on Austria’s western landscapes. Once we reach Bludenz, we transition onto the iconic Arlberg Railway, Austria’s sole east-west mountain railway. Opened in 1884, the Arlberg line is one of the highest standard-gauge railways in Europe, renowned for its rugged beauty and challenging terrain. Watch as the train skillfully navigates steep inclines, sharp turns, and tunnels, all while facing the constant potential for avalanches, rockfalls, and mudslides. This is an engineering marvel, with its 136.7-kilometer route. After crossing the Arlberg Pass, the route descends through lush alpine terrain, eventually joining the ÖBB-Oberinntalbahn. This final section transports us through the Inn Valley, known for its winding river, expansive meadows, and traditional Tyrolean villages. The journey culminates in Innsbruck, where the cityscape merges beautifully with the surrounding mountains.
