1. Soviet Invasion Era (1979–1989) In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support its communist government. Millions of Afghan refugees fled into Pakistan, especially into KP and Balochistan. Pakistan became a frontline state, supporting Afghan Mujahideen. The United States and Saudi Arabia funded and armed fighters through Pakistan’s intelligence (ISI). Result: USSR withdrew in 1989 after heavy losses. Afghanistan collapsed into civil war. 2. Afghan Civil War & Taliban Rise (1989–2001) After Soviet withdrawal, Mujahideen factions fought each other. In 1996, the Taliban captured Kabul and ruled most of Afghanistan. Pakistan recognized the Taliban government, while the US did not. Key tension: Pakistan accused of supporting Taliban. Afghanistan accused Pakistan of interference. 3. US War on Terror Period (2001–2021) After 9/11 attacks (2001), the US invaded Afghanistan to remove Taliban and destroy Al-Qaeda. Pakistan officially joined the US as a major non-NATO ally. But this created major conflict: Inside Pakistan: Militancy spread into tribal areas (FATA). Pakistan launched large military operations: Thousands of civilians and militants killed. Many enforced disappearances reported. Pakistan–Afghanistan tensions: Afghanistan accused Pakistan of harboring Taliban. Pakistan accused Afghanistan of hosting anti-Pakistan militants. This period is often called a proxy conflict phase. 4. US Withdrawal & Taliban Return (2021) In 2021, the US withdrew troops after 20 years. Taliban quickly took control of Afghanistan again. Result: Pakistan initially supported peace hopes. But border tensions soon increased. 5. Recent Tensions (2022–2026) Main issues today:Border Clashes Frequent fighting along the Durand Line. Militancy Pakistan accuses Afghan Taliban of sheltering TTP (Pakistani Taliban).
