In the United States, only 25% of hospitals are compliant with federal guidelines in ensuring access of care for sexual assault nurse examination (SANE) after a sexual assault. Not only does this create chaos for the survivor in seeking life-saving resources in the criminal justice system or alternate routes of safety, but also often translates to a critical failure of public health response when necessary screening and treatment options are not accessible for this high risk patient population. Having a clinician in the community who is competent in trauma-informed and patient-centered SANE care is crucial to addressing the ripple effect of harm caused by sexual violence. By means of simulation support, clinicians can learn how to best care for the SANE patient in a way that enhances evidence collection, acute medical care, and resource referral while also prioritizing representation, respect, and recovery for all patients in this unique setting. In this presentation, we will explore Drexel’s latest clinical skills curriculum for SANE training in partnership with the simulation team, as well as the impact of simulation in this nature of care. Presenter: Allison Denman, MS BSN RN SANE-A, Clinical Director, Forensic Nurse Manager, Philadelphia Sexual Assault Response Center Presented by CNHP Simulation Committee. Recorded Tuesday, November 7 • 12–1 p.m.
