The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP talks about progress made and future priorities for Closing the Gap. The Closing the Gap Prime Minister’s Report 2017 showcases real successes being achieved at a local level across the country – by individuals, communities, organisations and government. Read the report at http://closingthegap.pmc.gov.au/ ___________________ Transcript: This year's Closing the Gap report highlights many successes across the country, by individuals, families, communities, organisations and government. While we celebrate these achievements we can't shy away from the hard reality, that as a nation we are only on track to meet one of the seven Closing the Gap targets this year. All governments must work tirelessly at a regional and local level to effect national change. Now our commitment to Closing the Gap will not waver, but we must do things differently. When I tabled my first Closing the Gap report in Parliament, twelve months ago, I made it a commitment that my government would do things with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, not do things to them. And I am pleased to say we are making some real gains in that regard. We're putting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander at the centre of decision making in their regions. The empowered communities model operates in eight regions across the country, now that's only the start. Providing greater support for community led governance models that will over time support more local decision making. We must also recognise culture as paramount to finding solutions that respect and acknowledge and support identity. We have a responsibility to measure the success or otherwise of our policies and programmes, adjust them where needed, and share that knowledge across communities, so others can adopt and then adapt those learnings. We're focused on developing the knowledge base i partnership with communities to find out which policies are working and why. That's why I've announced the establishment of a specialist Indigenous Commissioner within the Productivity Commission. The Commissioner's work will inform a whole of government strategy to better assess what programmes and polices are improving the lives of indigenous Australians. Now closing the gap is complex and challenging. But this does not lessen our resolve or diminish our efforts. Nor does it detract from the many successes and the great progress we've made so far. Closing the gap is a national responsibility that belongs with every Australian. Only by working together can we achieve the lasting change that our first Australians deserve.
