Changes in Augustine's Text of 1 Corinthians: An Analysis of Primary Citations (Michał Marszałek)

A presentation given at the Fourteenth Birmingham Colloquium on the Textual Criticism of the New Testament in April 2025, which was also livestreamed. Through his numerous and various writings, Augustine is a privileged witness to the Latin versions of the Pauline Epistles. As scholars such as Ziegler (1879) and De Bruyne (1913) observed, his text of the Pauline corpus often diverges from the later textual form nowadays known as the Vulgate. Therefore, Augustine's citations are of great value for analysing the Old Latin versions of the Pauline Epistles. Building on my ongoing research, my paper presents initial insights into Augustine's text of 1 Corinthians and some of its distinctive features. The paper examines methodological issues related to establishing Augustine's biblical text, including the classification of citations. It then explores variations in Augustine's textual forms, with a focus on chronology and literary genres. It offers an analysis of several occurrences where the textual forms in Augustine's primary citations vary, such as 1 Cor 2:2 (nihil me dixi scire in uobis/numquid dixi me scire aliquid in uobis/neque enim iudicaui me scire aliquid in uobis) and 1 Cor 6:13 (deus autem et hunc et has euacuabit/destruet). The paper assesses whether those changes are due to different text sources or Augustine's citation technique. The aim of the presentation is to shed light on Augustine’s biblical text and its development based on all his primary citations of 1 Corinthians.
