Mountain biking Trail 100 in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve is one of the best ways to experience the rugged desert terrain that makes riding in Phoenix truly iconic. Starting at the Tatum Boulevard Trailhead and riding all the way to the base of Shaw Butte, this route delivers everything mountain bikers love—flowy desert singletrack, technical challenges, fast descents, and unforgettable views. The ride begins with a smooth warm-up, rolling across wide desert flats lined with saguaros and palo verdes. Even early on, Trail 100 keeps you alert with unexpected dips, tight corners, and patches of loose granite that make your tires dance. This opening stretch is perfect for getting your legs ready and giving viewers a sense of the trail’s character: accessible, scenic, but never boring. As the trail winds west, the terrain quickly shifts. Small climbs turn punchy. Corners get tighter. The landscape becomes more dramatic, with rocky hillsides and ridge lines that show off why the Phoenix Mountains Preserve is such a popular destination for local riders. The Chutes The Chutes is one of the most famous sections of Trail 100. It’s fast, loose, and shaped like a natural rollercoaster. Once you drop in, the walls funnel you through winding turns and chattery rock that sends your adrenaline through the roof. It looks wild on camera because it is wild in real life. After The Chutes, the trail offers a mix of flowy rollers and rocky technical bits, giving riders a fun balance of challenge and movement. Cannonball Next comes Cannonball, a steep, narrow descent that earns its name. This feature forces you to commit: once you roll over the edge, you’re in for a fast, direct shot down a chute-like lane carved into the hillside. It’s one of the most exciting moments on the trail and one of the highlights on Where U Beans?! Every time I ride it, the G-force at the bottom hits hard and the adrenaline spikes even harder. The Widowmaker Near the end of the route, just before reaching Shaw Butte, you face the legendary Widowmaker—a steep, rocky descent that intimidates even experienced riders. With sharp ledges, shifting gravel, and a nearly vertical approach, it’s one of the most technical features in the Preserve.
