As the carriages stopped, medical staff pulled out ramps to wheel the patients onto the specially-equipped train that would carry them westwards, away from the fighting raging in the east. The train is a lifeline for overwhelmed hospitals in cities and towns near the front lines struggling to cope with the added influx of war wounded on top of their usual flow of sick patients. It is run by the global aid organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders. The medical evacuation train, which includes an intensive care unit compartment, has been running since 31 March.
