This six-part series embarks on a global quest to understand the origins, meaning and future of the cultural stereotype that has become known as the hipster. The term "hipster" is one of those slippery labels that everyone uses but nobody wants. Centered in neighborhoods like Brooklyn (NYC) or Shoreditch (London), it has evolved significantly over the decades, moving from a subculture of jazz-loving rebels to a global aesthetic synonymous with artisanal coffee and vintage fashion. In the 21st-Century context, a hipster is typically a person (often in their 20s or 30s) who values non-mainstream fashion, independent thought, and counter-culture. The core of the hipster identity is the pursuit of authenticity. Ironically, because so many people adopted the "anti-mainstream" look, the style itself became a mainstream trend. While the look changes every few years, certain hallmarks remain consistent: vintage or thrifted clothing, flannel shirts, oversized glasses, beanies, and (frequently) well-groomed beards. Diet usually includes a preference for craft beer, small-batch kombucha, avocado toast, and locally roasted "third-wave" coffee. Among the hobbies: analog technology (vinyl records, film cameras), DIY projects, and niche indie music. Top values are sustainability, irony, and a rejection of "big-box" corporate culture. The most famous thing about hipsters is their denial: the first rule of being a hipster is that you never admit you are a hipster. The logic is that once you admit you belong to a subculture, you are no longer an "original" individual—the very thing a hipster strives to be. Sociologically, this is often called the "Hipster Paradox": in an attempt to look different, everyone ends up looking exactly the same.
