Kachina Peak chair at Taos, New Mexico, 4 March 2023. Taos’ famed Kachina Peak. Nothing but double blacks below it, and there’s a sign at the bottom saying no downloading, so if you go up, the only way you’re getting down is to ski it. And you’ll hear me say in this video that I was a bit intimidated in hopping on this lift, because looking at this face from the other side of the bowl, and seeing all the moguls and chutes and knowing that all of them are doubles, you couldn’t help but to be intimidated. But I went for it anyway. But, the good news is that the run right below the lift, called Main Street, is the easiest way down, and honestly, calling this one a double is, how should I say, generous. Certainly a single black, and to be absolutely as accurate as I can be, I’d call it one and a half black. But really, snow conditions on this day were so good, it wasn’t much trouble for me. Maybe on some other days, when the moguls are as big as cars and nothing but ice, that would probably be unpleasant and would result in an inelegant display of skier-in-over-his-head. But this day was magic.
