[Seventh Heaven MAXION] Oboro no Michi [RUS/ENG SUB]

This time, I have something special for you. A Futo, a nice boat, and a great Tao. This song, besides being totally epic, is literally riddled with references to actual Taoism. It could take me a damn mile in text to explain all of them in depth, but I'd rather try to make it as concise as possible. We all live in the same internet, and if you are as crazy as I am, you could very well just go and read on the topics yourself. I am here, though, just to give you a brief insight on what this beautiful song is about. Let's recall what Tao is. Literally, the word is translated as "Way" (which is the one being hazy here), and what it tries to describe is, in essence, a "way of everything". You see, chinese smartpeople really liked nature, and they generally thought that there is a way that everything around follows. As with, say, Nirvana, you cannot really describe it fully, you can just experience it, and the ultimate goal of taoist practices is to literally "become one with the Tao". The idea is not that far from "becoming enlightened" in Buddhism, and they are generally thought of as the same thing. Of course, "being one with the Tao" gives you a bunch of cool buffs. Again, different schools describe it differently, but you genuinely get to feel and understand "how world works". Everything is natural, after all, and you get to understand the ways and rules of nature itself. And you can see what I'm talking about when you look at the lyrics, the part about five senses. Now let's get more into the terminology. Spirit. By spirit here we mean the Qi. Qi is "life force" in chinese philosophies, and everything that is alive has Qi. When people get ill, the main goal of traditional chinese medicine is to fix up their Qi. And, of course, people who are one or close to being one with Tao are good at feeling Qi. This is also what presumably allows Miko to feel people's desires. The fact that the spirit is "ever-changing" is essential. Chinese philosophers thought of Tao as of eternally flowing water, where nothing stays as it was a millionth of a second ago. The nature of things is continuous, and Tao oversees this continuity. Dragon. When you talk about dragons in Taoism, you don't actually mean the fire-breathing flying reptiles, though the idea is there. Feng Shui in particular has a notion of "Dragon veins". Dragon veins are geomantic lines in the earth through which the Qi flows in great quantities. Those lines usually go through mountain arrays, which also look a lot like dragon's spines. Qi itself sometimes takes the likeness of a fire-like burning inner energy, by the way, so you can imagine how this metaphor plays out. Immortality. Basically, the closer you are to Tao, the more "natural" you are, and thus, the longer you live. Hygiene, good food, calm life, spiritual practices and other cozy things bring you closer to that. Some potions, probably, in which Seiga is well-versed. Three Divinations. They're called "meibokusou" in Japanese. Those are three out of five (meibokusouizan) general chinese practices. First three of them are divinations, so I called them so in my translation. "Mei" is divination by life facts. Example: you say your birth date, you have your future foreseen. "Boku" is divination by random events. Example: tarot cards. "Sou" is divination by appearance. Example: palm reading. Of course, such practices are possible purely because everything has natural order due to Tao. Being one with it is, once again, what makes you able to pull those off. Basic Principle. This principle is also called "Li". It is one of the main parts of Tao. You can also interpret its meaning as "pattern" or "rule". It denotes basic logic behind everything. Even physics as a discipline is known in the orient as "the science of Li", so you can make an analogy with physics too. Time, direction, aspect, synchronicity, order, enumeration. Stuff that Tao controls in one way or another. Tao isn't actually thought of as something that appeared due to a certain reason. It just IS, and all that happens around us is just a certain manner of its appearance. So taoists generally didn't think that nature is driven by any "reasons". It's by itself, with its own Way. And that's it, I guess. Amazing, really, how a musical arrangement may hold that much meaning in itself. I've spent hours upon days reading various materials on chinese philosophy, and it was well worth it. That's what I like about translating, when you spend a while of your time digging through artistically arranged ideas of authors, understanding them and then passing them to other people.
