Hi everyone! In this video, I explore the quaint village of Elim, situated approximately 200 kilometres from Cape Town in the Western Cape province, Overberg district and the wider Cape Agulhas municipality. Elim is a proud, close-knit community with roots dating back to August 1824 when German missionaries set it up as a Moravian mission station. Beyond spreading the gospel, they also taught villagers various trades and skills, and today, Elim’s thatchers are still celebrated for their excellence. The village also celebrates its 200-year existence in 2024. The vlog starts with me entering the town from the road leading to Bredasdorp, and giving information about its geography and its name. I then visit the area around the church and walk in the town, forming some impressions about its architecture and its people. At the other end of the town, I visit a local coffee shop where I order a takeaway cappuccino and notice the efforts to promote tourism in the wider area. With takeaway coffee in hand, I explore more of Church Street and Sand Street, interact with some locals and ultimately arrive back at the church. I briefly explore the Biblical Gardens. Titus, a member of the church council, shows me inside the church. Afterwards, we visit a local shop where we buy soft drinks and he takes me on a tour of his house. [Note: Following a request from a family member of Titus (not Titus himself), I took the decision to delete most of the footage of the inside of his home. This is despite him inviting me into his home and giving me permission to film, which I appreciated. I am terribly sad to have edited this, as I thought it showcased Elim and an extraordinary Elimer in a profound manner]. The next stop is the area around the Elim Heritage Centre and Tourism Office, which I also ultimately visit. Joyce kindly gives me a tour of the old Mission Stores as well as the Watermill. In the final part of the vlog, I visit the Memorial to the Emancipation of Slaves, before I reflect on my visit and what we can all learn from Elim. A special thanks to Titus and Joyce for their time, efforts and kindness. I hope you enjoy this video about Elim!
