(26 Oct 1995) English/Nat Imelda Marcos - wife of the late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos - has won her battle to take her seat in Congress. The success came after the Supreme Court voted nine-to-six to dismiss a motion which questions her qualifications for the post. The election commission initially disqualified Marcos as a candidate for the House of Representatives, saying she failed to meet residency requirements. Imelda Marcos appeared very happy before the cameras in the living room of her luxury suburban condominium. More than six months since she won her seat with a 33-thousand majority, she can finally sit in Congress as the representative of the first district of her home province of Leyte. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I was very, very happy that the... thank God, finally and at last, the Supreme Court of the Philippines has respected and upheld the overwhelming mandate of the voice of the people of the first district of Leyte." SUPER CAPTION: Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines Voting nine-to-six, the Supreme Court rejected the motion filed by defeated congressional candidate Cirilo Montejo questioning Imelda Marcos' qualifications. Now that the long wait is over, Marcos says she cannot wait to get to work. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I have never been as excited and as enthusiastic as this post because this is home and this is where it all begun." SUPER CAPTION: Imelda Marcos, former First Lady of the Philippines Once in Congress, Marcos says she will cooperate with other representatives for the good of the country. Meanwhile in a recent interview, the defeated Montejo said that if the Supreme Court ruled in Marcos' favour, he would pursue the case by filing a motion with the Congress Electoral tribunal. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I don't feel very good because I feel I am cheated, I feel something is wrong, I feel that I should still be there." SUPER CAPTION: Cirilo Montejo, Defeated Congressional Candidate Supporters shared her joy as they offered a toast to Imelda Marcos. The decision provided a measure of relief for the beleaguered former First Lady, who was sentenced in 1993 to 24 years in prison for graft. She is free on bail pending an appeal against the verdict.
