Set on the West Coast of New Zealand’s Taranaki region, Waitī House unfolds between mountain, river and ocean. Rolling hills lead to the property, where the rhythm of the Waio River and the presence of Mt Taranaki frame a setting that feels both grounded and expansive. Crosson Architects shaped the home around a rhomboid form, echoing the Brazilian flag in a subtle reference to the client’s heritage. This geometry opens the main living spaces to a 180-degree sweep of views, linking mountain and coast in a single movement. From the outset, the plan invites exploration: corners conceal glimpses of what lies beyond, and rooms reveal themselves gradually, layering anticipation with discovery. Inside, Ko & Ko curated interiors that foster warmth and softness. Forté’s Copenhagen timber flooring establishes a buttery, natural foundation, versatile enough to hold deep forest greens, rich blues and soft neutral tones. Timber wall linings and travertine stone features build upon this base, balancing gloss and matte surfaces to reflect shifting light throughout the day. The palette is restrained yet generous, ensuring the interior never competes with the landscape but instead heightens connection to it. At the heart of the design is collaboration. Crosson Architects, Ko & Ko and the clients worked closely to create a home that reflects identity and supports family life. The courtyard at its centre offers a quiet sanctuary—an open-air room for star-gazing at night or pausing within the day. Every detail, from the concealed transitions to the tactile finishes, is considered to enrich daily living while enduring over time. Waiti House is a study in subtle moves and shared vision. It demonstrates how architecture, material and partnership combine to create a home that belongs to both its people and its place.
