The Grafton and Kempsey Bus Crash - Australia's Worst Traffic Accidents

Hello everyone and welcome to the Weird, Scary and Horrible Parts of Humanity! Today we are exploring the two deadliest bus accidents in Australia's history, the 1989 Grafton and Kempsey Bus Crashes which left a combined 56 people dead in an eight week span with both accidents occurring on the Old Pacific Highway. Firstly we will analyse the 1989 Australia pilot strike and how this augmented the number of Australians and overseas visitors who needed to travel by coach due to a lack of flights and other means of transport such as trains. We will then explore the Grafton Bus Crash which took place in the early morning hours of 20 October 1989 when the bus collided with a semi-trailer causing 21 fatalities. We will explore the events that transpired, the cause of the accident as well as the recommendations by the New South Wales coroner. Secondly we will explore the Kempsey bus crash, also known as the Clybucca bus accident, which took place 8 weeks later on 22 December 1989 with two coaches colliding leading to 35 people being killed. We will analyse the after effects of the accident as well as the recommendations by the New South Wales Coroner. We will also explore the after effects of the accidents and the expansion of the Pacific Highway with the creation of a dual carrige-way finally completed by the end of 2020, what happened to the coaches involved in the Kempsey disaster as well as analyse how the coach industry has been decimated in Australia with only one national operator, Greyhound Australia.
