Some contend that feminism has failed black women because they argue that feminist movements and later, related institutions, have benefited middle class white women more than black women: as they tend to be white, assume a common oppression of women, and neglect the struggles of black and minority women. In order to bring women, and for that matter black and minority women, to the centre of feminism(s), other movements such as womanism, African feminisms, post-colonial feminisms among others sprang up. The multiplicity of feminist movements, the framing of women’s and other minorities’ struggles, their core issues and contexts, may pose parallels and misunderstanding. The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD), of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, by way of this webinar created the platform to engage seasoned scholars on the discourses of womanism, African feminism and post-colonial feminism, to deepen our understanding on their complexities, convergences, divergences and most importantly how to engage more inclusively for women liberation.
