Following the end of China’s civil war in 1949, many Shanghainese people left the mainland to move to Hong Kong. Some made a living by setting up barber shops to provide haircuts and shaving services to wealthy customers. Among them is 78-year-old Luk Chung-yan, who started in the business as an apprentice when he was only aged 10. Today, he is still serving customers at his parlour in Causeway Bay. The Post’s Llewellyn Cheung visited Luk at his barber shop to learn more and experience a classic Shanghai-style haircut and shave.
