In this presentation, Dr. de Cunzo will introduce you to 30 years of archaeology in Delaware centered on the colonial experience. Using projects in New Castle and at Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, she will talk about how communities and students have been engaged, what has been learned and how, and how perspectives are shifting on the histories, sites, and material culture of colonialism in Delaware. Lu Ann De Cunzo is professor of anthropology at the University of Delaware. An historical anthropologist, she specializes in the 17th – 19th century cultural histories of the Middle Atlantic region and 20th - 21st century heritage preservation and interpretation of these histories. At UD, she is engaged in the interdisciplinary work of the Center for Material Culture Studies, the Museum Studies and Public Engagement Program, and the Preservation Studies graduate programs. Her principal publications include The Cambridge Handbook of Material Culture Studies; Unlocking the Past: The Historical Archaeology of North America; and A Historical Archaeology of Delaware: People, Contexts, and the Cultures of Agriculture. Currently, she is directing an archaeological overview and assessment of the First State National Historical Park and working on a book project, The Archaeology of Colonialism along the Atlantic Seaboard.
