Mirror Lake is one of the easiest trailheads to access from the Portland area that leads to a pretty little mountain like where you can pick up the start of the Tom, Dick, and Harry mountain trail which after a couple more miles will lead to one of the prettier views in the Northern Oregon Cascades. There are views out to Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, and the Three Sisters. This is a great place to backcountry ski because there is a playground of different bowls with diverse aspects and most of it is below treeline which lowers, but doesn't eliminate, the avalanche danger. If you're looking to backcountry ski, you're bored with the glade and alpine trails but you don't want to venture into avalanche land, then this is a pretty good option. If you get spooked by conditions, you can always venture over to Skibowl from the top and ski out through the managed ski area.
