At first glance you may think this recipe must be tricky, but it is actually quite simple and absolutely satisfying for cold winter nights. The flavour and texture will impress and delight. Keep this one in mind for the Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year coming up in February or anytime you're ready to try it! 1/2 Bean curd sheet - Cut the half into 2 for 2 people Grapeseed Oil (for frying) 1 Star Anise Pod 1 Allspice berry 2 Dried Whole Chillies 2 TSP Ginger slices 1 Cup Veggie Stock (used my own homemade stock) 1 TBSP Low Sodium Soy Sauce (gf if needed) 2 TSP Vegetarian Oyster Sauce (mushroom based) 1/4 Cup Plum Sauce 1 TSP Cornstarch (before frying) Garnish: Green Onion White Sesame Seeds Optional: Sprinkle with chilli flakes I paired this with some bok choy splashed with a little soy sauce and sesame oil, as well as some miso grilled eggplant. You may also like to make some Shanghai noodles to make a very hearty meal. ________ Thoughts/Notes: If you use the whole bean curd sheet, use double the liquid and sauce. You may also want to have one additional star anise pod and an allspice berry. Additional ginger perhaps. I recommend that the bean curd sheet is cut into four equal slices before preparing, as this is more manageable. If you do make some bok choy, please soak and wash them well. I cannot stress this enough. (Especially if you are kosher). If you make the whole batch and you cannot finish the rest in one sitting, the left over pieces work excellently in Shanghai noodles. I recommend getting some shiitake mushrooms in that case too. Plus, any leftover bok choy can be chopped and mixed in with the noodles. If you cannot handle chillies, they are not mandatory, but I certainly love my chillies. The flavour of the veggie stock will also add to the flavour of this dish. A nicely seasoned stock will benefit the final outcome. I found there was enough saltiness with the soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce, and my homemade stock. If you are one who likes a little extra salt, please try not to go overboard for this reason.
