(9 Dec 2025) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AGENCY POOL Castel Gandolfo, Italy - 9 December 2025 ++NIGHT SHOTS++ 1. Pope Leo XIV walks outside Villa Barberini to speak to media 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pope Leo XIV: "I'd rather not comment on that. I haven't read the whole thing. I think unfortunately some of parts of it that that I have seen make a a huge change in what was for many many years a true alliance between Europe and the United States. The remarks that are made about Europe also in interviews recently I think are trying to break apart what I think needs to be a very important alliance today and in the future. So it's a programme that President Trump and his advisors put together. He's the President of the United States has a right to do that. It has a number of things in it that I think while perhaps many people in the United States would be in agreement, I think many others would see things in a different way." 3. Cutaway of flag 4. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Pope Leo XIV: "Evidently, the main topic is the issue of war, and how to seek an agreement, a ceasefire. We spoke specifically about the issue of kidnapped children and prisoners, and how the Church can help bring them back to Ukraine." 5. Cutaway of flag 6. UPSOUND (Italian) Reporter asks: Will you go to Ukraine as per the President's invitation? SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Pope Leo XIV: "I hope so, I don't know when. We have to be realistic in these things, maybe it can be done." 7. Cutaway of exterior of Villa Barberini 8. UPSOUND (Italian) Reporter asks: President Trump continues to question Europe's role for peace in Ukraine. What do you think about it? SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Pope Leo XIV: "I really think that Europe's role is very important. The unity of European countries is truly significant, especially in this case, seeking a peace agreement without including Europe in the conversations, it’s not realistic. The war is in Europe. I think in the guarantees of security that are also being sought today and in the future Europe must be part of them, unfortunately, not everyone understands it this way, but I think that there is a very great opportunity for Europe's leaders to unite and seek a solution together." 9. Cutaway of exterior of Villa Barberini 10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Pope Leo XIV: "We spoke about it (returning of kidnapped Ukrainian children to their familieis), most of the work that's going on, which is very slow unfortunately, but it's done if you will behind the scenes, so I'd prefer not to comment. More than that, we continue to work on that to try and get those children back to their homes, to their families." Leo walks on at end of remarks to media STORYLINE: Pope Leo XIV said US President Donald Trump's recent remarks about Europe were "trying to break apart what needs to be a very important alliance." The Pontiff said that while many in the US would agree with the Trump administration's peace plan in Ukraine, "many others would see things in a different way." Leo said Europe's role in seeking peace in Ukraine was important. "The war is in Europe. I think in the guarantees of security that are also being sought today and in the future Europe must be part of them, unfortunately, not everyone understands it this way," he said. In a recent interview, Trump criticised European leaders as "weak" and suggested the US could scale back support for Ukraine. Leo spoke to reporters after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Castel Gandolfo, his vacation home south of Rome. He said he would like to accept an invitation from Zelenskyy to Ukraine in the future if possible.
