3.7.26 Extended First Alert Forecast: Here is an update as we get ready for a very active pattern next week after a fairly quiet weekend. Now through the weekend: The current weather pattern stays fairly calm. Moderate to breezy east-southeast trade winds will continue across the islands, bringing the usual passing showers to windward and mountain areas. Overall conditions remain fairly stable, so most places will see typical trade wind weather with plenty of dry periods. Late Monday into Monday night: This is when the pattern begins to change. Starts quiet then evolves west. A developing low pressure system northwest of the islands will start shifting our winds from the typical trades to southerly “kona winds.” As winds turn southerly over Hawaiʻi, they will then pull warm, moisture-rich air northward from the deep tropics. Clouds will increase and the first bands of heavier showers could begin reaching Kauaʻi. Tuesday into Wednesday:🚨 This currently looks like the most active part of the pattern for the entire state with the most still expected over the western end first. Deep tropical moisture combined with an approaching upper-level disturbance could produce widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms, and locally strong winds statewide. Rainfall could begin to fall repeatedly over the same areas. Saturated grounds, downed trees, flooding and high streams a big concern. Falling trees near electric lines could be a concern too. Initially model runs show 10 plus inches of rain over neighborhoods where the terrain plays a role with help anchoring rain to the mountains. Nearly impossible to know the rain totals with the nature of this system. It will be substantial, depending on thunderstorms and development of persistent waves of heavy downpours. Late week, expecting continued waves of rain especially over Maui County and Hawaii Island possibly into Saturday: The complex system is expected to move slowly, which means unsettled weather may linger. #hiwx #hnn #hawaii #hawaiinews #weather
