Today we stand behind the railfan window once again as we take a small ride on Metra's Union Pacific West Line from Elmhurst to Downtown Chicago Ogilvie Transportation Center. This is train No. 60, the 6:28 P.M. departure from Elmhurst. Originally it was outbound train No. 59, the 5:46 P.M. departure from Chicago. This run is pretty unique as it runs mostly express to downtown, stopping only at Oak Park. From Elmhurst, we switch onto the Proviso third mainline track which was completed in mid-2013 by the CREATE Program to increase rail capacity and to alleviate other problems between Berkeley and Bellwood. From there, we briefly stay on double tracking as far as River Forest where we return to triple tracking. Following our stop in Oak Park, we parallel the CTA Green Line for a while, then as we get closer to the city, we start seeing some interesting sights, including large commuter layovers and facilities and Tower A-2, one of the last remaining control towers in the Midwest if I'm correct. Now, I know a lot of railfans and a lot of my subscribers who visit this line very frequently. Since I don't know this line too well despite having ridden it now a few times, if there's anything you think that has not been specified enough, please leave a comment below. Suggestions and tips are always helpful. Thank you and enjoy!
