Health Alert: Stealth Station

Stealth technology isn't just used in our nation's defense system. As News 13's Jay Siltzer explains in today's Health Alert, surgeons are performing procedures locally without ever seeing the trouble spot with the naked eye. Jonna Prescott, "my right leg would go to numb." That was the first symptom that sent Jonna Prescott on a journey for help. Jonna, "it was hard to walk long distances, some short distances at times." Mission Health surgeon James Hoski met Jonna, diagnosed a pinch nerve along with a slipped bone, and scheduled minimally invasive back surgery. Using Stealth Station, it integrates a surgical navigation system with inoperative imaging systems. Dr. James Hoski, Carolina Spine, "so as opposed to me making a big incision and needing to see the spine directly, I can make a relatively small incision and do the same procedure while looking at this Stealth system, this navigation system." Patients receive reduced radiation, the camera actually picks up the light reflected off the balls and, overall, the process proves quick. Jonna, "I went to the hospital on Monday, come out on Friday and I was out walking around out in the yard with a walker a couple of days after I got home." Recovery time is probably twice as fast and so in her case she was able to return to work 6 weeks after spine fusion and typically that would be three month out-of-work procedure.
