In this video, we will explore how the rise of teen culture and pop culture during the 1950s in the United States significantly changed American society. We will dive deep into the differences between teen culture in the 50s and prior, as well as later, decades. We’ll look at how society was transformed through the challenging of the firm traditional values, the gifting of new identities and independence to adolescents, and the driving of major shifts in popular culture—music, fashion, literature, and media. Together we’ll see how much impact social gatherings—concerts and protests—between teenagers of all races had on the way youth from that generation portrayed segregation and how they fought and spoke out about racial injustice. We’ll also touch on how these acts of speaking out and listening to rock music seemed like acts of rebellion to adults, who almost all believed adolescents were becoming a menace to society. Most importantly, we’ll analyze the massive impact popular culture had on young teen brains, and how much it shaped their views, expectations, and ideologies about the world around them, resulting in the slow change of societal norms that paved the way for further change by generations of teens in future decades.
