We stayed in an Airbnb in Silverton for a week and were able to easily see all of these places without much trouble. While Silverton no longer allows OHVs to drive within city limits, we were able to keep the sxs and the trailer parked at Silverton Lakes RV Park and Cabins for the days we explored the Alpine Loop ($40/day for a dry camping spot). Day 1 - We started from where our trailer was parked and headed north towards Ironton on County Rd 110. We passed over Corkscrew Pass and made our way down Corkscrew Gulch to the Ironton Park Staging Area. After doubling back, we made our was over to Lake Como/Hurricane Pass before arriving in Animas Forks. Day 2 - We completed the full Alpine Loop and ended up putting about 80 miles in in 1 day. Starting from Silverton Lakes RV Park and Cabins once again, we made our way east towards Cinnamon Pass. Over Cinnamon Pass, we made our way over to Lake San Cristobal before arriving in Lake City for lunch. Packer Saloon is the perfect lunch spot for the Alpine Loop. After Lake City, we made our over to Ute Ulay mine which is one of my favorite spots on the loop. After making our way over Engineer Pass, it was back to Animas Forks before making our way back to Silverton. Silverton is probably the best town to stay in for accessing the Alpine Loop due to its larger size and more restaurants/shops in the downtown area but I think we will be staying in Lake City next time due to the feel the small town has and the ability to drive the our Can-Am straight onto the trails for wherever we're staying. Day 3 - We hiked the section of the Perimeter Trail starting at Cascade Falls and made our way over to Baby Bathtubs Trail before walking back into Ouray for a late lunch. Box Canyon Falls is another cool spot to checkout while you're in Ouray but we weren't able to make it happen on this trip with a couple of kids that were gassed after the hike. Day 4 - We made our way back to Ouray to checkout Imogene Pass. Lower and Upper Camp Bird are a couple old mining operations on this section that are cool to checkout but not much remains compared to Ute Ulay Mine and Animas Forks. From Imogene Pass, we made our way over towards Yankee Boy Basin were we stopped to explore Twin Falls. While this might not have been the most relaxing vacation we've taken, we accomplished everything we were after and hope we've established some life-long memories for our kids. #offroad #outdoors #explore
