Immediately after the German invasion of Poland, and in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, the Free City of Danzig was incorporated into the territory of the German Reich. Following the swift defeat of the Polish army, terror descended upon the newly-occupied territories. In Gdańsk Pomerania, located in northern Poland between the Baltic Sea and the Vistula River, the repression was especially brutal. This area, home to both Polish and Kashubian communities - an ethnic group native to northern Poland - was subjected to a campaign of murder, arrests, and systematic extermination. Even before the invasion, German authorities had drawn up lists targeting members of the Polish elite—teachers, clergy, military veterans, doctors, and landowners. These lists were part of a coordinated plan known as "Intelligenzaktion," which aimed to eliminate the Polish intelligentsia and thus destroy any future resistance to Germanization. One of the most notorious figures responsible for inciting this violence was Albert Forster, the Nazi Gauleiter or Regional Nazi Party leader of Danzig-West Prussia. In a speech delivered at the Prusinski Hotel in the town of Wejherowo, Forster publicly encouraged ethnic Germans to participate in acts of violence against Poles.
