South Korea, which will co-host soccer's premier event with Japan, organized a 960-man squad in Seoul on Thursday and will launch smaller contingents at nine other host cities later. The ten squads will involve a total of about 3-thousand police. The anti-hooligan squad demonstrated various types of anti-riot techniques, helicopter drills to combat terrorism, and martial arts at Hyochang soccer field during its launching ceremony. South Korean national police say the special squads will be equipped with helicopters, water cannons, batons and shields. The decision to form an anti-hooligan squad came after South Korean and Japanese police officials met in Tokyo last week to work out joint measures against possible rioting by hooligans during the competition. Next year's event will be the first-ever World Cup in Asia, where violence at stadiums is rare. To prevent riots by drunken hooligans, Japanese organisers have said they will ban alcohol at games. Korean organisers, however, have tentatively decided to allow beer at stadiums. The soccer's world governing body, FIFA, hopes South Korean and Japanese organizers will allow beer to be served at games, but said it will not interfere if they decide against it.
